TO BE OR NOT TO BE? THE TRUTH BEHIND COMMERCIAL FRAGRANCES

This post was inspired by one of customer’s questions: “My question is in regards to the DMAE Total Restore lifting serum and the Organic Facial Cleanser … Do the skin care products have an offensive smell…are they expired/old?”

You will be surprised but many natural ingredients that benefit our skin, have really weird or unpleasant smell. In commercial cosmetic lines the percentage of such ingredients is lower and synthetic fragrances are used to mask the natural smell of the formula.

Why synthetic? Simply because natural fragrances have a tendency to fade during the shelf life of the product unless some other chemicals added.

Synthetic fragrances are more complicated, stronger, allow to create more sophisticated combinations, cheap…and are not organic!

Those additives are either chemically created (mostly from petroleum), or produced from naturals and have had their chemical structure modified. Synthetic aromatic raw materials fall into the categories of chemically modified natural raw materials, nature identical raw materials and aroma chemicals that do not exist in nature.

Look for the combinations or single ingredient like these to recognize synthetic preservatives and fragrances:

ENZOPHENONE-4            CI 17200

METHYLDIBROMO GLUTARONITRILE

PHENOXYETHANOL         CI 42090

METHYLPARABEN

ETHYLPARABEN

PROPYLPARABEN

FRAGRANCES

They pose low to moderate health risks if used in small quantities.

We do not use those chemicals and keep the formula as natural as possible. Here is an interesting break down of each ingredient for Total Restore Serum with the notes about theirs natural smell:

Aloe barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice Being a relative of GARLIC (they both belong to Lily Family) it does have somehow offensive smell if raw. The yellow sap that is present in the outer ring of the leaf has a musty smell. It is actually a giveaway that the product is natural and not some Aloe Vera Juice dissolved in petroleum Glycerin and deodorized with chemicals.

The polysaccharides act as moisturizers, hydrating the skin.

Vegetable Glycerin Odorless. Assist to retain moisture and to dissolve other active ingredients.
Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) The smell is usually similar to decaying fish and is a by-product of the choline break.

A naturally occurring substance that facilitates the synthesis of a neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE also may stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of cell membranes. Interestingly, DMAE is far better known and researched as a “smart drug” than a skin firming agent. In a number of studies, DMAE has been shown to reduce age-related decline in cognitive ability and memory.

Limnanthes alba (Meadowfoam Seed) Oil Offensive odor development in refined meadowfoam oil can be a problem for processors and formulators. It is often replaced by deodorized version.

Meadowfoam oil has excellent moisturizing properties. Combined with its chemical stability, this makes it a popular ingredient in skincare products. Many natural skincare lines use meadowfoam oil in moisturizing products to hydrate and rejuvenate skin.

Emulsifying Wax Has low fatty alcohol odor. A cosmetic emulsifying ingredient.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) Has “characteristic” sulfur smell. An organic compound that contains sulfur.Sulphur is essential for collagen synthesis, to keep the collagen fibers bouncy and elastic, which encourages skin pliability and elasticity. It helps damaged skin repair and wound healing.
Spirulina maxima (Blue Green Algae) Extract Has seaweed odor.

Astringent and moisturizing.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Non Deodorized tocoferol has specific strong smell. If you open a gel capsule – those are usually filled with non deodorized tocoferol, as they are not supposed to be open, – you will recognize its strong offensive smell.

A fat-soluble vitamin that plays a significant role in human health. As an antioxidant, vitamin E helps maintain healthy cells and, subsequently, a healthy body.
Phenoxyethanol (chemical) Has subtle rose smell.

Fights bacteria. Most personal care products are made with a lot of water and a variety of nutrients – consider all of the natural ingredients as incredibly hospitable breeding ground for bacteria.

Salix nigra (Black Willowbark) Extract Has no odor.

Natural ingredient reach in salicin. Helps to reduce the appearance of skin aging. Naturally exfoliates and clears the skin.

Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Oleoresin Has camphorous smell. Soothing and protecting effect, antioxidant.
Azadirachta indica (Neem) Oil Has strong sulfurous smell if not deodorized. Unfortunately removing the smell, removes some of the effectiveness.

Oil extracted from its seeds is rich in phytoconstituents (antioxisnats), has antiviral, antibacterial and soothing properties.

Xanthan Gum (Polysaccharide Gum) Has slight vinegary odor.

A binder , emulsion stabilizer, skin-conditioning agent.

Citric Acid Odorless.

Diammonium, Potassium and Sodium salts help preserve cosmetics and personal care products by chelating (complexing) metals. Citric Acid and its salts are also added to cosmetics to help adjust the acid/base balance.

Tetrasodium EDTA Odorless.

To bind to metal ions which inactivates them. The binding of metal ions helps prevent the deterioration of cosmetics and personal care products. Used instead of parabens in natural products.
